Surcharging
Adding a fee to card transactions to offset processing cost — legal in some states, not all.
A surcharge is an explicit extra charge applied to credit card payments to pass processing cost to the guest. It is governed by both card-network rules and state law: networks require registration, capped percentages, clear signage and receipt disclosure, and several states restrict or prohibit the practice outright. Debit and prepaid cards generally cannot be surcharged at all. Confirm the current position for your state and your card brands before switching it on — this is not legal advice.
