MCC (Merchant Category Code)
The four-digit code that tells the card networks what kind of business you are.
A merchant category code classifies a business for the card networks, and it materially affects interchange rates, card-network rules and which acquirers will underwrite you. Full-service restaurants generally fall under MCC 5812, fast food under 5814 and drinking places under 5813. Being boarded under the wrong code can mean wrong pricing and, occasionally, declined transactions, so it is worth confirming on your merchant agreement rather than assuming.
