Handheld ordering removes the trip to the terminal. What that actually buys a full-service dining room, and the habits that decide whether it works.
In a traditional full-service room, a server takes an order, walks to a terminal, queues behind two colleagues, enters it, and walks back. Repeat for drinks, for the next course, for the extra side someone asked for. Across a shift that is a substantial amount of time spent walking away from the guests.

The habits that decide whether it works
Handhelds fail in rooms that adopt the device without changing the routine. If servers take an order on paper and then enter it into the handheld at the station, you have added a step and bought nothing.
- ✓Enter at the table, not afterwards. This is the whole point and the habit most likely to slip.
- ✓Agree how the device is held and where it lives between tables, so it is not left on a bar.
- ✓Decide what still needs a terminal — some rooms keep one for complex splits or manager functions — so nobody is stuck.
- ✓Plan charging. A handheld at forty percent battery at 7pm is a service problem.
- ✓Check connectivity in the far corners of the room, not just near the pass.
In a formal room, a device between the server and the guest can feel intrusive. That is a real concern and mostly a training one — the rooms where it works have servers who take the order looking at the guest and enter it looking down, not the reverse.
Where it matters most
The gain scales with the distance between tables and terminal, and with how often a table orders. A large room with two stations gains more than a small room where the terminal is three steps away. Rooms that pace by course also gain disproportionately, because ringing courses as they are needed means more trips — unless the terminal is in your hand.
