Void vs. Comp

A void removes an item before it's made; a comp gives away an item already prepared.

A void cancels an item before it hits the kitchen or the bill, usually a mis-ring with no cost incurred. A comp ('complimentary') gives away an item that was already made — a recovery gesture or staff meal — and carries a real food cost. Tracking voids and comps separately matters because comps eat into margin while voids don't, and clean reporting helps owners spot patterns.
